Tiger's PGA title zooms almost to the top

The Oklahoman produced a list in July of the top 100 sporting events in state history. We did not limit to within state borders; if the Sooners or Cowboys, for instance, did something special on the road, that counted.

But if we had listed only the top events within state lines, a new list would be in order even before the official centennial, on Nov. 16.

Tiger Woods stopped by. Tiger's victory in the PGA at Southern Hills, his 13th major championship, would zoom to nearly the top of the list.

In fact, I would say Tiger's victory is the No. 2 sporting event on Oklahoma soil, trailing only the 1971 Game of the Century, and ahead of other classics like Freckles Brown's ride of Tornado, a variety of Sooner football showdowns and a bevy of Gallagher-Iba Arena thrillers.
