AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn's turnaround is the state of Alabama's top sports story for 2013.
The Tigers' rise to a Southeastern Conference championship and national title shot on the heels of a 3-9 season topped the list chosen by The Associated Press.
Auburn has matched the biggest one-season improvement in college football history. The Tigers are 12-1 and play Florida State on Jan. 6 in Pasadena, Calif.
The year began with Alabama winning its third national title in four seasons with a route of Notre Dame in south Florida. That was chosen as the No. 2 story for the year.
An Iron Bowl showdown decided on a last-play return of a missed field goal is No. 3.
Other top stories include playoff runs by Jacksonville State and North Alabama and college basketball struggles.
