Time stands still as a fake tree for Oklahoma kid

Does your Christmas tree always go in the same place? It depends on what you're definition of “always” is.

O, Christmas tree, where art thou?

(O, wow! A new Yuletide flick! Get the Coen brothers! Or Tim Burton! ... and already I digress ...)

So, where is your Christmas tree(s)? — and I must digress again:

Some people put up more than one tree. Really? For room for more presents? Kidding! To each his or her own. I know: It's for the kids.

But it seems to me like it would, you know, dilute the Christmas spirit. If you have extra, I guess it's OK to spread it around like that. Put up a forest!

But that means more than one Christmas star on top. Too polytheistic for me! Kidding again! Don't bother sending me that “Ten Things You Might Not Know About Christmas” thing going around Facebook. I do know.

The tree I want is in a tree lot somewhere, or still in the ground at a tree farm or its natural environment — where it will stay. Three cats just make it too much hassle to have a live tree. Maybe my heart is three sizes too small, but no thanks.

Some of my favorite trees over the years B.C. were live, but I don't remember ever buying one. No, they were hauled in during the Great Christmas Tree Hunts of Sequoyah County, circa mid-late 1980s.

My friend Kent and I would go traipsing across his family land around Long and cut a cedar for whatever hole-in-the-wall I happened to be living in. The Great Christmas Tree Hunts of Sequoyah County always ended with 3.2 Christmas cheer at Scott's Tavern, a classic concrete-block honky-tonk next to the rooster-fightin' barn north of Muldrow. Those were the days, I tell you what.
