Time to bury the drama in Miami

I don’t ask a lot, but I have one small request now that the University of Miami’s near-three-year NCAA nightmare is effectively over.

After today, may we never again think of or utter the words “Nevin Shapiro.” Please? May we place this sordid little chapter in Miami athletic history in a lead safe, wrap that safe in padlocked chains, and drop it in the deepest, darkest ocean, so far offshore that the only bottom-dwellers who might come across it are creatures science has not even discovered yet.

Miami penalties

Penalties the University of Miami was handed Tuesday by the NCAA as the Nevin Shapiro scandal presumably drew to a close:

• Miami’s football team will lose a total of nine scholarships over three years.

• The men’s basketball team will lose three scholarships over three years.

• The school will serve three years of probation.

• Former men’s basketball coach Frank Haith, now at Missouri, will sit out the first five games of his team’s upcoming season.

• Two former football assistant coaches and one former basketball assistant were handed two-year show-cause bans.
