Here, from Web resources, are some helpful thoughts — and some sound advice — for those who are thinking about doing a staycation rather than a vacation.

Check before you go

Recent heavy rains have caused problems at some Oklahoma state parks and recreation areas. Tourism officials recommend you call ahead, or check their Web site for updated information.

You can go to www.touroklahoma.com for the latest information on areas that have been affected by rainfall and flooding.

You also can go to www.travelok.com for information on possible spots to visits.

A step farther, to www.travelok.com/todo/events.search.asp, will give you the Tourism Department’s list of events.

Remember: this is your time off from work and other routines. It will be what you make it.

• Vary your activities and put some adventure into your staycation. Don’t pick destinations that are unreasonably far away. Keep close to home.

• Plan creatively. Consider possibilities together, but hear what all those in your party are interested in and try to make it worthwhile for everyone.

• Whenever possible, check Web sites for those locations you would like to go to. Discount coupons can save you money on admission costs or other expenses.

• If you have questions, e-mail or call the destination information office ahead of time. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

• Don’t forget your digital camera, or at the very least, a one-time-use camera. If you use a digital, take extra batteries and memory cards. Take plenty of pictures.

• Save flyers, ticket stubs, or other memorabilia (including post cards) for a scrapbook of your adventure.

• Don’t forget when planning to include the cost of admission and an estimated cost of food or other necessities.

• Whenever possible, consider having a meal at a picnic location nearby. If the weather is acceptable, it can be a great time for all.

• Remember that this is a vacation. Stay away from work-related chores or calls if any way possible.

• Limit your destinations to those that can be reached in the time you have planned. Don’t overextend.
