The Shackelfords' donation was matched by T. Boone Pickens, and the $500,000 total endowment was then matched by the state of Oklahoma. The resulting $1 million endowment will be used to expand the OSU floriculture program.

The Shackelfords, who own TLC Nursery and Greenhouses, said the donation was their way of saying "thank you” to OSU's horticulture department for years of education and advice that helped them grow their business. Charles Shackelford is an OSU graduate with a bachelor's degree in plant pathology.

The money will be used to hire a professor and to finance workshops, training and curriculum in floriculture, the study of greenhouse plants.
