When Durant mumbled “nothing” as he continued to walk away from the camera, his response created controversy and forced Durant to explain his comment on social networking Web sites Twitter and Facebook.
“I dissed Oklahoma cuz I didn't wanna sit n talk to TMZ and all I said was the word nothing..y'all forgot all the times I scream OKC? ok cool” Durant posted Tuesday on his Twitter account.
Since he entered the league in 2007, Durant, the NBA's reigning two-time scoring champion, has spent his summers traveling throughout the country. Teammates Russell Westbrook and James Harden both live in the Los Angeles area, and Thunder players over the past three seasons have scheduled visits to each other's hometowns to work out.
While in Los Angeles last weekend, Durant also played in the legendary Drew League, a longtime pro-am summer league, and sparked a video of an off-the-backboard pass to himself for a tomahawk dunk to go viral.
TMZ, which specializes in celebrity gossip, has become notorious for catching celebrities on the street and putting them in compromising positions by posing uncomfortable and controversial questions. The network's camera caught Durant as he was entering and leaving an L.A. establishment. In the video of the brief exchange, the cameraman originally thought Durant was Miami forward Chris Bosh. Durant's comment then came as he was leaving.
