Toby Keith and wife Tricia Covel among Door-Opener honorees

Oklahoma country music superstar Toby Keith and his wife Tricia Covel will be among he six honorees recognized at the Door-Opener Awards Gala Sept. 4 at the Skirvin Hilton Hotel.

Along with honoring several civic leaders, each of which have made great strides during their careers in helping open doors for others in Oklahoma, the event benefits ASTEC Charter Schools.

The 2014 Door-Opener honorees:

Toby Keith and Tricia P. Covel, Norman: Public schools music education supporters; founders, OK Kids Korral.
Dr. Harvey Dean, Pittsburgh, Kan.: Educational programs and services pioneer.
Former Gov. George P. Nigh, Edmond: Public education proponent; former public school teacher; former state representative, lieutenant governor and governor, state of Oklahoma; former president, University of Central Oklahoma.
Dr. Ramona Paul (posthumous), Edmond: Early childhood public education trailblazer; former assistant state superintendent, Oklahoma State Department of Education; children’s book author; faculty member at major universities in Oklahoma, Texas, Iowa and Indiana; and active civic volunteer with numerous nonprofit organizations.
Natalie Shirley, Oklahoma City: Higher education leader; president, Oklahoma State University – Oklahoma City; former secretary of commerce and tourism, the state of Oklahoma; past president, Investment Company Institute Mutual Insurance Group; and volunteer leader with several nonprofit organizations.
