High school notebook: Tom Cobble, Charley North headed to Oklahoma Coaches Hall of Fame

Chickasha football coach Tom Cobble, former Dibble head coach and University of Oklahoma assistant Charley North and former Edmond and Tulsa Union football coach Rick Jones were among 10 inductees into the Oklahoma Coaches Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Coaches Association announced Monday.
Cobble has taken three different teams to state championship games, most recently Enid in 2006.
North, currently an assistant at Norman, coached at Wagoner, McAlester, Tecumseh and Dibble. He also spent time at OU, Arkansas, TCU and Alabama.
Jones, who now coaches in Greenwood, Ark., coached at Edmond from 1985-89 before moving to Union. He also spent time as the head coach at Broken Arrow.
Other inductees include Ronnie Asbill of Sallisaw, Larry Bookout of Morris, Dan Bradberry of Talihina, Mark Campbell of Claremore, Jim Coleman of Watonga, Blaine Stone of Watonga and T.J. “Sonny” Vermillion of Blanchard.
Asbill spent his entire career at Sallisaw, joining the Black Diamonds as an assistant in 1972. He stayed there until stepping down in 2011 due to health concerns.
He was Sallisaw's head coach from 1988-1995.
Asbill died last month at 62.
The induction ceremony will be held July 28 at the Southern Hills Marriott in Tulsa at the start of the OCA All-State Games.
HARRAH HONORS ROGERS
After the death of teammate Sara Rogers last April, the Harrah girls basketball team made it a point to honor her throughout this season.
Rogers, 16, died from injuries sustained in a car wreck on April 17. Her memory, though, lives on with the Panthers (19-9).
Eight different players wore her No. 22 jersey at the eight home game this season. And during this week's Class 4A state tournament, the players will wear T-shirts featuring her shoes during warm-ups.
“The kids are so emotional and happy,” Harrah coach Curt Knox said. “It was like she was in the gym the other night, you know in a divine way, when we clinched it.”
Knox said the jersey is unlikely to be used during the tournament. “It would be just too tough for me to pick which one to wear 22,” he said.
Harrah opens Thursday at 2 p.m. against Cushing (24-1) at Southern Nazarene University.
GOLIGHTLY, SYLVESTER LEADING CHICKASHA
One of the key components to Chickasha's run to the Class 5A boys state tournament has been its ability to come out on top in tight games.
