U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn's schedule is always crammed, his weeks in Washington filled with the pressing issues of the day.

When he goes to the First Baptist Church of Muskogee, “it's a time of relief and a shelter from a pretty windy storm. It's a period of mental rest and spiritual peace.”

Coburn, 60, started going to the church when he was 3 years old. He went to a different church for a time but switched back so he could take his elderly stepfather to First Bapist.

Coburn, R-Muskogee, is teaching a class for adult men on the attributes of a disciple.

“What does a man look like in his everyday life if he's trying to be a disciple of Jesus?” Coburn said in describing the class.

He said his “celebrity” is never a focus at the church and that people don't try to make him talk politics and policy.

“I was a member long before I was a congressman or senator. And I play it down. And I pretty much say, ‘Hey, this is Sunday. I'm not working.’ ”

Coburn said he is continually amazed “about how God works.”

During a tense time recently over some legislation, two different senators agreed with him to make changes in legislation that would allow it to pass.

“It's fun for me because it's kind of a mysterious journey,” he said.

“There are things I have no control over, but they're exciting because you can't explain them just because of the actions of man.”

It seems like we learn something new everyday about Dr. Coburn's $700+billion blank check to Wall Street.

It now appears that the banking industry will shift the funds for other purposes. Specifically:

"But reports surfaced that bankers might instead use the money to buy other banks, pay dividends, give employees a raise and executives a bonus, or just sit on it. Insurance companies now want a piece; maybe automakers, too, even though Congress has approved $25 billion in low-interest loans for them."

Senator Coburn needs to leave Washington and take his "wisdom" elsewhere. We can't afford to have him representing Oklahoma. He is an embarrassment to the state and dangerous to the long-term health of our country.

Matthew 23 would make a great Sunday School lesson. "Straining out gnats and gulping down camels" is very topical for today's Senate and House.
