Tommy Beavers started working for the department while a student at Central State College, now known as the University of Central Oklahoma.

As a data processor he sometimes did work for the retirement system, which he officially joined in April 1970, he said.

He will have been director 21 years by the time he retires in December.

“I’ll be 67 next month and I’ve worked for more than 40 years, and it’s just time for me,” Beavers said. “I promised my wife five years ago that I’d retire, so if I don’t do it pretty soon I’m going to be in big trouble.
