A lot of songs mention fishing, but there are few really good songs about fishing.
With that mind, I've compiled my top 10 list of the best fishing songs of all time.
If I owned an IPOD, and could figure out how to use it, I would have all of these on it.
And if I missed a good song, send me an e-mail. I'm always looking for new music.
1. The Five Pound Bass
By Robert Earl Keen
"Up this morning, before the sun, fixed me some coffee and a honey bun. Jumped in my pickup, gave her the gas, I'm goin' out to catch a 5-pound bass.
"Down by the lake side, just off the ramp. All them people sleeping in their fishing camp. Some out in the pup tents. Some out on the grass. They all be dreaming ‘bout that 5-pound bass.”
I'm a huge fan of Johnny Cash because when Cash sings it, I believe it. The same is true of Robert Earl Keen.
When I hear "The Five Pound Bass”, I think this guy must be one of us. He has lived it.
Plain coffee and a honey bun. Now that's a fisherman's breakfast.
2. I'm Gonna Miss Her
By Brad Paisley
"Well, I love her, but I love to fish. I spend all day out on this lake and hell is all I catch. Today she met at the door, said I would have to choose. If I hit that fishin' hole today, she'd be packing all her things and she'd be gone by noon.
"Well, I'm gonna miss her, when I get home.”
Does anyone really believe Brad Paisley would choose fishing instead of his wife, Kimberly Williams-Paisley (Jim Belushi's sister-in-law on "According to Jim)?” I don't think so. But a great song.
3. Fishin' Blues
By Taj Mahal
"Here's a little tip I would like to relate. Big fish bites if ya got a good bait. I'a goin' fishin.' Yes, I'm goin' fishin and my baby's goin' fishin' too.
It's called the Fishin' Blues, but every time I hear this tune it makes me feel better. If I had an outdoors television show, I would want "Fishin' Blues” as my theme.
4. The Crawdad Song
"You get a line and I'll get a pole, honey. You get a line and I'll get a pole, babe. You get a line and I'll get a pole, we'll go fishin' in the crawdad hole, honey, baby mine.”
This song has been recorded by Harry Belafonte, Burl Ives and George Jones, just to name a few.
