Gov. Brad Henry announced the appointment Monday of Chris L. Ross as district attorney for the 22nd District, which encompasses Pontotoc County.

He succeeds William Peterson, who is resigning effective Jan. 1.

24 years of experience
Ross, 50, first assistant district attorney for the 22nd District, has been with the prosecutor's office since 1983.

After graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1979, Ross earned his law degree from the OU College of Law in 1982.

Ross is married and has two children.

Peterson was the prosecutor involved in the wrongful convictions of two men, Dennis Fritz and Ron Williamson, in the 1982 rape and murder of an Ada woman.

Williamson was sentenced to death and Fritz was sentenced to life in prison. DNA evidence cleared both men, who were released after 11 years in prison. That evidence also implicated Glen Gore, who was a key witness at their trial. Gore was convicted last year.
