PICHER — A young couple with an 8-month-old son were among those killed Saturday when a tornado wiped out the town of Picher.

Samuel Don Berry, 20, and wife, Tracy Dawn Berry, 19, were driving to meet Samuel's mother for dinner the night the tornado hit, said Christi Patel, Samuel's mother.

The couple were killed when Saturday's tornado lifted their car into the air, twisted it in circles, then threw the passengers down near a lagoon on the south side of town, Samuel Berry's mother said.

"He was in the car and he was supposed to have dinner at 6 p.m. with me,” she said. "They drove right into (the tornado) and it picked the car up and they found his body and her body on Mother's Day.”

The couple's infant, Lucas Don Berry, was staying with other family members during the storm and was not harmed, Patel said.

Only one of the car's four passengers survived, Patel said. The other tornado victim in the car was Tracy's uncle, Darrell Edward Patterson II, 28, of Wagoner, Patel said.

Six people were killed Saturday by the tornado in the northeastern O klahoma town of Picher.

Home from the Army
Samuel had recently moved back to Picher after a yearlong Army rotation in South Korea, Patel said.
