MUSTANG — Mike McGarry's woodworking students got into the Christmas spirit early this school year, thanks to a project that provides toys for children.
McGarry teaches woodworking at Mustang High School. His students built 105 wooden toy cars that will be given to kids at places such as The Children's Center. Although graded on their final products, students were enthusiastic about the process.
“The kids loved doing them,” he said. “I think it made them feel good that they're doing something positive that's going to benefit people.”
The toy cars are distributed by Glenn Morgan of Good Samaritan Toys. Morgan has been giving the cars away, funded mostly from his own money, for 19 years.
He contacted McGarry several years ago about helping with the toys project.
“It's a wonderful thing,” Morgan said.
“Many of them (the recipients) have heartbreaking stories and these toys make things just a little better for them. It gives them something to take their minds of their problems for a while.”
