This is the first time you’re able to hear a track off of Matt Stansberry & The Romance’s upcoming sophomore album, “Crash Landing,” and The Middle of Nowhere couldn’t be prouder to share it first. What on earth are you waiting for? Click stuff.

Things fall apart whether we like it or not.

That’s what I gathered from talking to Edmond-based singer/songwriter Matt Stansberry. Yes, he is in fact the same Matt Stansberry that fronts the Romance, an ambitious throwback soul project that boasts as many as 10 members at a time.

Stansberry and I spoke in an Edmond coffee shop about the title track from the Romance’s upcoming release, “Crash Landing.” He said the song was inspired from seeing his friends divorcing, relationships ending and the trials of his own marriage.

The track illustrates these struggles with the imagery of a plane falling apart as it lands.

“This record isn’t going to be viewed as happy,” Stansberry said. “This one is gonna be our dark record.”

The track definitely carries a heavier tone, but it’s wrapped with a subtle sense of optimism. Even as the plane falls apart, it still lands in the end and everything ends up OK. That’s the song’s sliver lining, Stansberry said. “Crash Landing” is small taste of the new album’s offerings but it sets the tone for the rest of the record.

You can help celebrate the release of “Crash Landing” June 12 at the UCO Jazz Lab. Ticket info is on the Matt Stansberry & The Romance website. You can also pre-order the album there and satisfy your vinyl craving while you’re there.
