Traffic Talk: Crosstown Expressway 'adjustments' continue

Don Gammill: There still are some areas that require attention along Oklahoma City's newest highway, the Interstate 40 Crosstown Expressway
By DON GAMMILL Published: January 14, 2013

Remember, the new Crosstown Expressway is just that: new. There will be tweaking.

Don, now that we have a spectacular drive through town on the new I-40, are you embarrassed as I am with the “black hole” through much of the new highway? What is the problem with the lighting? Thanks

No embarrassment for me, Jerry. I'm a fan of lighting that is necessary, but not overdone.

Anyway ... Here's a response from the people who are closest to that project.

“There are lights installed now along most of the I-40 Crosstown corridor ... from the I-235 junction west to near Penn,” said Brenda Perry, of the state Transportation Department.

“As is customary, the city took over maintenance duties of these lights once they were completed. In checking into (Jerry's) concern, our engineers noticed there are some bulbs out in this area and have alerted the City of OKC.

“There is another section of the I-40 Crosstown in which the lights are not yet complete ... from near Penn west to the I-44 junction. Lights are included as part of the construction currently under way in this area, however it's estimated to be another month or two before the lights in this area are complete.

“Drivers are asked to remain alert to workers and equipment along the I-40 Crosstown near downtown Oklahoma City. Lane closures are continually changing so drivers need to locate temporary alternate routes early. Daily lane closures are noted in the traffic advisory section of Plan ahead for extra travel time, especially during peak traffic hours.”
