Traffic Talk: Interchange project to get illumination

Don Gammill: Lights expected to illuminate the Interstate 44/Broadway Extension interchange in Oklahoma City.

There's still much to be done in a specific area in the Oklahoma City metro that has been a traffic hot spot for many years: The Interstate 44/Broadway Extension interchange.

Construction in that area already has made a difference in traffic flow and that's something positive. This has been the site of one of the highest numbers of hits — as in collisions — in Oklahoma City. Hopefully, changes made and changes still to come, which will transform this interchange significantly, will make it less dangerous and more functional.

It looks as if the recent phase of the I-44/I-235 construction is complete — except for lighting. All of the new overhead lights look great during the day, but many of them are not operational yet. It's getting increasingly darker as I pass through there around 6:30 a.m. daily and as we add slick roads to the mix in the coming months, visibility is going to be even more important. Also, the highway lighting along I-44 south and west from that interchange needs some attention — all the way to Penn Square and beyond.

Hang on, Russell. Again, there's more to come.

Cole Hackett of the state Transportation Department has your update.

“The new overhead lights that were installed as part of the recently completed project are in place, but not on yet because OG&E is installing a new transformer and completing connections,” Hackett said.
