Have you ever wondered why you see construction signs on a site after the work has been completed?

Maybe, just maybe, there's more to do.

“Some construction signs must stay up throughout the entire project, whether there are workers present or not,” says Larry Clore, of the Media and Public Relations office of the state Transportation Department.

“‘Road Work Ahead,' ‘Construction Zone: Traffic Fines Double When Workers Present' and reduced speed limit signs must stay up until the project has been inspected and approved as complete.

“However, when a construction sign alerts drivers to a closed lane, it usually means that there are workers present, or there is some sort of hazard that would keep drivers from using the lane.

“On the other hand,” he adds, “if a sign alerts to a closure, and upon approach, the lane is actually open, this can be a safety issue and should be corrected.”

This is where YOU can help.

“Drivers should alert the proper authorities to correct the situation. If you are on a highway or interstate, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation should be contacted at *55, so we can alert the contractor to the error.

“If it happens on a city street, the local municipality should be alerted. Safety is important, so please wait until you reach your destination before getting on the phone to contact authorities.”
