It's gotten more than a little crowded on the north side recently as major road projects continue. Progress is being made, but motorists just need to be patient. Progress does take time.
I live in the Durban Hills subdivision at NW 178 and Western. They have been working on moving utilities on Western for the last two years. Would you find out when they are going to start construction and how long it will take? I have contacted Oklahoma City but no response. I travel Western daily and wondering when I need to change my route.
The man with the answer is Ahmad Lesani, general obligation bond program manager for the city of Oklahoma City.
He said, “The widening for Western Avenue, from NW 164 to NW 178, is scheduled for construction in spring 2013.
“Since the intersections of NW 164 and NW 178 have previously been widened, I estimate the construction duration of about nine months.
“Another project that widens Western Avenue from NW 178 north to the city limits is under design. It is on placeholder for bond sale in 2013.”
Ahmad says that part of that roadway already has been widened to four lanes and requires some repair/overlay.
“If all things go accordingly,” he says, referring to handling utilities, etc., construction may begin in summer 2013.
“That project will take longer as a bridge north of NW 192 has to be raised and replaced,” he said. “I estimate 15 months of construction for that stretch.”
Meanwhile, nearby ...
We often take 164th street (15th in Edmond) to Portland (State Highway 74). This street is now nicely four-laned from Western nearly to Penn, then from just west of Penn to May. When is the city going to finish that bottleneck at Penn?
City officials said a water line relocation project, part of the widening project, is part of the problem. In addition, there is some temporary rerouting necessary.
The contractor has been building detours for the street widening, which means motorists need to pay close attention.
By the way ...
Watch those signs in and around any construction zone. When the sign says the lane you are in is ending, move over. Don't wait until the last minute.
At the least, you'll be frustrated. But you might not like how you are greeted by those who did follow directions.
Enjoy your week and drive safely.
