Traffic Talk: Reflective paint highlights safety
Don Gammill: When it comes to safety, anything that can alert a driver to a danger such as the edge of the roadway can be helpful.
The email began with a few comments about speed limits, including this one:
“I can remember back in the '40s the Oklahoma speed limit was ‘whatever was safe to drive.' Unfortunately for me and other teenagers of my era, limits were imposed and, of course, we had to test our luck!”

Then, the writer, Mickey, switched to safety issues and offered this:
“My main safety advice gets ignored. I have suggested to the city, county and state that all curbs in center divider medians be painted with a white reflective paint ... (such as the white lines along the sides of highways).”
He went on to say that the lines have proved to save lives and that painted curbs would do the same for impaired drivers or those traveling in bad weather.
“This would save hundreds of thousands of dollars in car damages and medical expense,” he said. “It would also eliminate the expense of replacing the signs in center medians that keep getting knocked down on a regular basis.”
There are statistics to support a part of your advice, Mickey.
Anything that can alert a driver to a danger such as the edge of the roadway can be helpful.
The lines at the edge of the roadway — referred to as edge lines, fog lines, boundary lines and other terms — are there for a reason.
