It’s a promise I keep each year as a favor to a man who loved children and watched out for them.
I’ll keep it short, and hope the message will be clear.
Several years ago, a crossing guard I knew only as John called me to ask that I write a reminder for everyone to please slow down in school zones.
It has become an annual event, though John is no longer with us. I promised him I would deliver the message, and have done so now more than a dozen times. It’s one of those things you can’t say enough.
So as the school year resumes, slow down and watch out for the little ones around schools. The signs and blinking lights are there to remind you children are crossing the street. Here’s a chance to be a good (and safe) example for future adults and parents who one day will be driving.
By the way ...
An inattentive driver recently appeared to be texting while speeding through a well-marked school zone.
I say “appeared to be” because she was wiggling her thumb over the phone as she crowded over the line into my lane.
I say “speeding” because I was traveling at the posted reduced speed as she passed me.
She only looked up when I honked the horn, but I still don’t think she knew where she was.
Dangerous in more ways than one.
In another area ...
Don, recently there has been a truck stop built on the southeast corner of the intersection of I-35 and (State Highway) 33 here in Guthrie and Love’s is building a new truck stop on the northeast corner of the same intersection. Does ODOT have plans to update this intersection with new traffic control, i.e. traffic signals? — Larry
Thanks for the note, Larry. Here’s your answer, from Cole Hackett at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation:
“ODOT recently completed a traffic study at the intersection of I-35 and SH 33 in Guthrie and has been working closely with the City of Guthrie to determine what upgrades are needed in this area.
“Later this year, ODOT has a project scheduled to install traffic signals at all of the on- and off-ramps at I-35 and SH 33, as well as to improve the medians and pavement conditions of SH 33 at the interchange.”
Enjoy your week and drive safely.
