Traffic Talk: Turnpike Authority official explains tolls, barrier work

Happy Memorial Day, everyone. Here's hoping it will be a great holiday for you and your family.

As always, I urge you to enjoy your time off, but be careful. On the road, buckle up and watch your speed. On water, make sure everyone has the proper equipment. On either surface, don't drink and drive.

Memorial Day is the first big holiday of the summer season, but it's also among the most dangerous. Too much celebrating can lead to trouble and tragedy.

Among areas to be concerned about are locations were roadwork is under way. Check stories in The Oklahoman and on for the latest information.

Here's one spot in the metro area where work has been ongoing lately and will for some time.

Could you please tell me why the Turnpike Authority had the cable barriers installed a little over a year ago (I think) when they must have already been planning the widening project on the turnpike? They spent all of that money putting up the cables and now they have all been torn out. What a waste of money. Since I am sure they already had the plans in place for the widening, why didn't they just wait? It is no wonder that they keep raising the toll fee.
