Happy Memorial Day, everyone. Here's hoping it will be a great holiday for you and your family.
As always, I urge you to enjoy your time off, but be careful. On the road, buckle up and watch your speed. On water, make sure everyone has the proper equipment. On either surface, don't drink and drive.
Memorial Day is the first big holiday of the summer season, but it's also among the most dangerous. Too much celebrating can lead to trouble and tragedy.
Among areas to be concerned about are locations were roadwork is under way. Check stories in The Oklahoman and on NewsOK.com for the latest information.
Here's one spot in the metro area where work has been ongoing lately and will for some time.
“First let me address tolls,” he says. “The toll increase in 2009 was the first increase in nearly eight years for the turnpike authority. No new toll hikes are anticipated in the near future.
“The cable barriers were installed at the request of the secretary of transportation and for safety purposes. At the time the cable barriers were installed, we did not believe we could begin the widening of the Kilpatrick Turnpike as soon as we were able to.
“In a little more than a year while the barriers were installed, they prevented several possible crossover accidents. I believe there were 11 accidents of vehicles going into the barrier. That's a possibility of at least 11 lives saved. In addition, the cable barriers have been taken up by the construction company doing the expansion and they will begin to reinstall those same barriers on the western sides of the Kilpatrick, from Interstate 40 to State Highway 3.”
For those of you traveling the Kilpatrick, remember that the widening will continue for several months. Watch out for those crews.
Enjoy your week and drive safely.
