Travel Along: California Dreamin'

Planning a trip to California requires thoughtful consideration of the wide range of interests and ages of the group traveling together.

California is such a large state made up of almost 164,000 square miles and with 38 million people. It would require a number of visits to see all the beauty and sights that it has to offer. So when planning a short 5-day trip for a family reunion with two grandsons along, we had to limit the sightseeing to allow time to visit family.

When a trip requires you to pick-and-choose, it’s wise to get input from all the travelers and then try to keep everyone happy and entertained – no easy task when the ages range from 7 to 70! And yet, somehow or other, we managed to do just that.

Our flight on American Airlines was the first positive step, because it was a direct flight to Los Angeles. With iPads and downloaded movies, books and snacks ready to go, everyone was entertained and the flight didn’t seem too boring.

Once in L.A., we picked up a reserved large SUV for the six of us and headed south to our Huntington Beach hotel. We checked in at a Residence Inn that provided comfortable accommodations for all in an ideal location near the beach and family.

During our 5-day stay we opted not to visit Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain or other typical tourist destinations. We spent considerable time at several different beaches, including Huntington Beach, Venice Beach and Santa Monica Beach. All offered expansive sandy beaches, and Huntington Beach has fire pits that can be reserved for picnics.
