Travis Lewis: Don’t sleep on Austin Box

Much attention has been given to OU’s young linebackers, like Ronnell Lewis and Tom Wort.

But the leader of the group, Travis Lewis, cautions not to write off junior Austin Box.

“I hope ya’ll don’t forget about him, because he might be in the starting lineup for Utah State,” Lewis said.

Box, a native of Enid, was penciled in as the starter at weak-side linebacker in 2008. But a couple weeks before the season opener, Box had his knee scoped. That cleared the way for Lewis to take a starting job on the weak side, a position he’s held ever since.

Box has been on and off the field the past two years, dealing with an array of injuries to his elbow and knee.

But Box is currently healthy, and battling Wort, Ronnell Lewis and Daniel Franklin for the starting nod in the middle.

“He’s had the injuries, but regardless of all that, Box works hard. He’s one of the hardest workers ever since he stepped on the field,” Lewis said. “He’s had some unfortunate injuries, but I think he’s back to full strength, full speed, and he has a chance to start against Utah State. If he didn’t get hurt when I was a freshman, he’d be the starting weak-side linebacker.

“He’s ready to prove himself. I think he’s going to prove a lot of people wrong.”
