A preliminary review revealed more than $40,000 in unauthorized withdrawals from the account, M. Scott Carter, president of the local chapter, said in a statement.

Contacted by telephone, Cooper referred all questions to his attorney, Ed Blau.

“My client deeply regrets his actions as detailed in the Oklahoma SPJ statement,” Blau said. “Words cannot express the embarrassment and remorse my client feels as a result of his mistakes.”

Blau said Cooper is working to repay the money and “asks for the forgiveness of his friends and colleagues.”

Other leaders of the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists first learned of the missing funds May 8 when they were notified checks written on the organization's account had been returned for insufficient funds, Carter said.
