Treat day tricks can haunt you for years

Happy Saturday.

I was talking with some of fellow reporters the other day about Halloween celebrations when we were younger.

I remember dressing up as a superhero one bitterly cold Halloween night. My mom made me wear a coat on top of my costume.

It defeats the purpose of being a superhero if you have to wear a coat over your cape. I’m not sure I’ve gotten over that night.

Now trick-or-treaters are being urged to use hand sanitizer to avoid the swine flu virus before handling their cache of candy. We live in different times, don’t we?

Remember, Trick or Treat on the Street is from 5 to 7 p.m. today on Broadway.

Downtown merchants hand out treats for the kids.

The event is a treat to the community from the Downtown Edmond Business Association.

Smoking in the park
I received two more responses this week on the Edmond Parks and Recreation Department plan to ban smoking in parks and around sports fields.

Richard Prawdzienski of Edmond wrote, "Restricting smoking in parks is an example of protecting our children and providing the healthiest environment possible? Give me a break.

"Want to protect? Then we should stop using gas mowers in parks and right of ways. Better yet, let’s make lawn mowers illegal for all. We all know that 5 percent of U.S. air pollution comes from lawn mowers; over 16,000 children injured in 2007 by lawn mowers.

Commenting on smokers’ rights, Kenneth Slaughter responded succinctly, "What rights?”

This is a pathetic waste of newspaper space and byte space. Unless smoking becomes illegal this is silly. If you are really so concerned about smoking ban cigarettes and cigars, period end of story. But dont print this trash about protecting the "children". I cant believe a Republican rag would print trash like this. Write about something important like well how right to work has failed in Oklahoma, like how there are few jobs in Oklahoma, like how health care reform is not reform but re-distributing wealth, ect ect. This is a lame piece of shit article and needs to be trashed, pathetic.

I have stated in other columns why I hate Hollowevil but this comment section is for tricks that haunt someone the rest of their lives.
I have an acquaintance that is blind in one eye. But years ago he and others were riding in the back of a truck throwing out watermellons.
One that he threw went through a car window and blinded a woman in the car.

I went to the Hard Rock Tusla. They must have still been remodeling because the buffet was absolutely filthy. There was food literally pressed into the carpet, chairs, and I believe in one area, the ceiling. Only one tiny non-smoking area on the casino floor, and no Hard Rock Cafe. The rest of the casino was full of smoke from just a few folks. The only upside was they gave me a nice crisp $20 when I signed up for the gambling card.

Smoking in casinos is what keeps me away from most Oklahoma casinos. Especially Remington Park. They have the worst air handling system of them all. If I do get up the courage to go, I will usually just head for the Thursday night buffet and limit myself to that area. I have no problems with Vegas casinos as they spent considerable resources on their filtration systems. They utilize huge electrostatic precipitators. If you see them clean one you will see a huge amount of tobacco gunk wash off as they steam clean the cells on the back service dock. The only casino in Oklahoma I am aware that is using this system is the new Hard Rock in Catoosa. I know certain things seem to go along with smoking and I have no problems with it being allowed in bars, clubs, bowling alleys, and all the usual things that are traditionally married to cigarettes.

While I'm not a smoker (actually allergic to it), I have to agree with Jeff. The only thing I dislike about some of the smokers is they just toss butts anywhere.

This Halloween I give up. Last year it was an endless stream of buses and SUVs dropping off dozens of kids, one-house-at-a-time. When I was a kid you had to walk the whole neighborhood to get a sack of candy. Now with "safe" alternatives like the malls and church trunk-or-treat, I just don't feel the need to waste money on bags of overpriced candy.

Smoking outdoors is a health risk only to the smoker. Saving "the children" is a convenient excuse for government to usurp freedom and raise taxes and they use that excuse over and over and over and over and over and over.....
