Oklahoma football: Trevor Knight's family gets the news they'd been waiting for

Oklahoma fans finally have their quarterback, and George Knight can detach himself from constantly checking his computer for OU football news.

NORMAN — Each and every spare moment the past week, Trevor Knight's father was glued to a computer inside his San Antonio dentist's office.

George Knight would visit patients, then hustle back into his office, listen to Oklahoma sports radio, and constantly check OU message boards and newspaper websites for any scrap of information he could find regarding the Sooners' quarterback battle between his son and junior Blake Bell.

“I just didn't let my patients know that I was thinking more about Trevor's situation than I was their teeth all week,” George Knight said with a laugh Thursday evening.

Following Thursday's official announcement that Knight, a redshirt freshman, will start the Sooners' 2013 season opener Aug. 31 against Louisiana-Monroe on Owen Field, Oklahoma football fans finally have their quarterback, and George Knight's patients finally have their dentist back.

Forgive George Knight's unquenchable thirst for information; he certainly wasn't getting it from his tight-lipped son.

As Oklahoma City TV reports surfaced early in the week pronouncing Trevor Knight the winner of the Sooners' quarterback battle, his mom and dad found themselves bombarded with congratulatory phone calls, text messages and emails.

“I just kept responding, ‘Those are just rumors. Trevor has not gotten the job. I will let you all know as soon as we find out,'” said Tricia Knight, Trevor's mother.

George Knight spoke with his son several times throughout the week, but each time he'd begin to broach any subject relating to football, his son clammed up.

“He'd say, ‘I think about that all day. Let's talk about something else,'” George Knight said. “I think that kept him in more of a comfort zone to not talk about it, and talk about school, what's going on with us and those things.”

When Tricia Knight talked to Trevor on Tuesday, after a second TV report claimed he'd won the job, the redshirt freshman told his mom to block it all out.

“He said, ‘Mom, you really need to just ignore everything. It's just a rumor,'” Tricia Knight said.

“(Wednesday night) my phone was going off a lot, but I just pretty much ignored my calls and all my text messages last night. I never look at blogs or anything like that.

“I told my husband, ‘Don't tell me anything you hear or read. I'm gonna wait and hear what the coaches decide.'”

Knight becomes the Sooners' first starting quarterback not named Landry Jones since Sam Bradford's season-ending injury in the 2009 Red River Rivalry game against Texas.
