Trivia game is far from trivial

Turns out, working at a newspaper doesn’t mean I’m up-to-date on current events. Shameful.

Earlier this fall, I volunteered at the Teen emPower annual trivia night fundraiser. Teen emPower is a nonprofit designed to reduce teen pregnancies. My job was to read the current events trivia questions to more than 30 teams of eight.

After questions were read, the teams huddled together to discuss possible answers. They were whispering. There was no normal talking in here. This was serious. And there was a big prize on the line: bragging rights.

I read my 10 questions and the teams handed their answer sheets in. I reviewed the answers. I thought the questions were pretty tough, but apparently everyone in the room knew the answers but me.

But aside from my ineptitude at current events, I didn’t perform too shabbily in the other categories.

A few of us who read questions waited for our turn at a table toward the back. During the first round of trivia, we thought we’d give it a shot, and we did OK. The next round went even better. If only we were playing the full game, we would have been one of the better teams, according to the scoreboard.

Competitiveness lassoed us like cattle.

Next year, we’ll compete for real. But the competition is tough. The winning team got 90 of the 100 questions right. Members were Amy Bradt, Zac Bradt, Michelle Rodriguez, Steve Rodriguez, Graham Munn, Ed Birdwell, Leslie Bishop and Greg Zornes.

But they need to look out. Next year, I’ll be back, and I’ll bring friends — ones who know current events.
