OHP Lt. Brian Sturgill received an honorable mention award as Parade magazine named its national police officer of the year.

Sturgill received the honor on Tuesday at the annual International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in San Diego. He was one of 11 finalists for the award.

Along with OHP Trooper Joe Howard and Kingfisher Fire Chief Randy Poindexter, Sturgill helped rescue LeRoy and Bernice Krittenbrink on Aug. 19, 2007. The rescue received national attention, as it was shown live on television.

The Krittenbrinks had been stranded in their pickup by rising floodwaters, the result of heavy rainfall from the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin.

The couple credits the troopers and fire chief with saving their lives.
