A man who died in a gunfight with state troopers first attracted their attention when he ran a stop sign, authorities said Monday.

Troopers began pursuing Zachary J. Sumner, 34, of Midwest City, on an Interstate 35 service road near SE 29 in Oklahoma City early Saturday, patrol Lt. Brian Orr said.

The chase ended near Interstate 40 and Sunnylane Road in Del City.

At the end of the chase, Sumner got out of the car and exchanged gunfire with troopers Ryan Smith and Chris Bunch, Orr said.

Smith was shot in the face and Bunch was injured in the leg. Both men have been released from an Oklahoma City hospital, Orr said.

Smith and Bunch are on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Sumner pleaded guilty in 2011 to a charge of possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute. He was given a deferred sentence, but a judge issued a bench warrant for his arrest in November after he violated the terms of the deferred sentence. has disabled the comments for this article.
