The vehicle also was stolen but was recovered with the .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun inside about 4½ hours later, according to reports.

No disciplinary action will be taken against Kerry Massie, 39, trooper Kera Philippi said. She said Massie, a 15-year patrol veteran, took every precaution to prevent the gun's theft.

Massie was inside White Water Bay with his family Wednesday night when he noticed a bag containing car keys and other items was missing, according to a police report.

Massie went to the parking lot and didn't see his vehicle.

The vehicle was found early Thursday at SW 20 and MacArthur, Philippi said.
