SAND SPRINGS — More than three years after returning from her second tour of duty in Iraq, Staff Sgt. Jan Rachels finally received a welcome home Sunday. Along with 19 other Army reservists, Rachels marched through a ceremony at the Armed Forces Reserve Center.

"It’s a little late in coming,” Rachels said. "But it’s still nice that people care enough to come see us and say ‘Thank you.’”

Federal law mandates that every Army reservist receive a Warrior-Citizen Award after serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.

The award presentation includes an encased American flag, a commemorative coin, a lapel pin and a plaque.

The soldiers didn’t seem to mind their long wait.

"We don’t go over there to get this,” said Rachels, who served with a fuel tanker company during her first deployment to Iraq and with a vehicle maintenance company on the second deployment.

"We go over there because we want to.
