Tulsa artist knows how to get to 'Sesame Street'

Dustin Evans provides colors for Ape Entertainment series based on Big Bird and the rest

Tulsa-based Dustin Evans is bringing his skills to “Sesame Street,” a new comic-book series from Ape Entertainment based on the Children's Television Workshop TV series.

It's just one of many current projects for the multitalented artist, who is also working on the Sonic the Hedgehog character and a series of children's books.

Evans' colors on “Sesame Street” were featured in the issue released on Free Comic Book Day this year, and on the subsequently released first regular issue.

“Aaron Sparrow and Jason Burns, previous editors with Ape Entertainment, asked me to join the Sesame Street art team as the digital colorist,” Evans said via email. “We had previously teamed up together to work on the Richie Rich revamp and several other projects, so this was a very natural progression.”

In addition to his familiarity with the team, Evans was very familiar with the property.

“Like most kids of my generation, I was fascinated with any and all Muppet-based shows, Sesame Street was no exception,” Evans said. “Cookie Monster was always my favorite of the Sesame Street crew.”

Evans says creating the right texture for the puppet characters on “Sesame Street” is among the challenges; also, since everyone from the smallest children know what these characters are supposed to look like, there's little room for error.

“The tough thing about working on any licensed property is following the guidelines for each property,” Evans said. “Everyone knows the characters, and if they're not perfect, they will call you on it. I knew I needed to give the Muppets a fur-like texture as well as color, so that was a challenge and a lot of fun to come up with just the right look.”
