TULSA — The mother of a 2-month-old boy who was mauled to death by a Labrador puppy has been charged with second-degree manslaughter, according to a juvenile court order filed Tuesday.

Court records from the Tulsa County juvenile division show Linzy Leigh Earles, 18, was charged Friday as a juvenile because the alleged criminal act was committed on July 28, when Earles was 17.

Earles turned 18 on Oct. 24, records show.

Holly Earles, the suspect’s grandmother, told police she had gotten up to check on baby Zane about 9 a.m. on July 28, and the baby was sitting in his swing and "seemed to be OK,” so she went back to her bedroom to sleep, according to a police report.

She woke again about 10:15 a.m. and went into the dining room — and began screaming when she saw the baby’s injuries and saw the dog nearby. The grandmother’s screams awoke the child’s mother, who picked up her son and carried him to Holly Earles’ bed, while the grandmother called 911.

AFFIDAVIT

The search warrant affidavit says:

→Linzy Leigh Earles has a history of drug abuse and was taken off juvenile probation just weeks before her son, Zane, was mauled.

→Police said Earles left Zane in a swing for about two hours while she slept.

→"A 9- to-12-week-old Lab puppy that was left loose in the house ate the 2-month-old victim.” The puppy apparently ripped out a portion of his abdomen. Police recovered what they thought were body parts from the dog’s stomach.
