alert tips

Officials are asking residents to help reduce air pollution today by taking the following steps:

• Ride the bus. Rides are free today in Oklahoma City and Norman.

• Pump gas at night and don’t top off the tank.

• Carpool if possible and combine trips into one outing.

• Don’t speed.

• Put off mowing the lawn.

It’s the sixth Ozone Alert Day issued this year for the Oklahoma City metro area, said Jerry Church, a spokesman for the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments.

This is the 10th alert issued for Tulsa, according to the Indian Nations Council of Governments.

The state Department of Environmental Quality issued an ozone air quality health advisory Wednesday for Tulsa and Wagoner counties.

Elevated ozone levels were reported in 21 other counties: Caddo, Canadian, Comanche, Cotton, Garfield, Grady, Grant, Kay, Kingfisher, Lincoln, Logan, Mayes, Noble, Oklahoma, Okmulgee, Osage, Pawnee, Payne, Rogers, Wagoner and Washington.

Ozone is formed when nitrogen oxides and organic compounds mix in sunlight. Pollutants come from vehicles, gas-powered engines, industry, lawn equipment, boats, paint and grills.

High levels of air pollution particularly affect at-risk groups, such as people with asthma, adults older than 65, children younger than 18 and patients with chronic pulmonary disease, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
