Tulsa school, the first gay-friendly school in Oklahoma, celebrates diversity

A new Tulsa private school is set to make history as the first gay-friendly school in Oklahoma.

However, the Oklahoma Alliance Academy was founded to provide individualized learning in a safe, bully-free environment for any student from sixth to 12th grade who is different in some way, said school headmaster CC Lawhon. It’s not just for students who identify as lesbian, gay or transgender.

“These are kids who’ve been made fun of for their differences instead of valued for their differences,” she said.
