Tulsa to lose 2,100 American Airlines jobs

American Airlines executives announced Wednesday the company plans to cut up to 2,100 jobs in Tulsa.

AMR Corp. plans to eliminate 2,100 jobs in Tulsa, a company spokesman said Wednesday afternoon during a press conference at American Airlines' maintenance base in Tulsa.

"We learned that the base will remain open for years ahead, but we believe this is something we have to do at this point," said AMR spokesman Tim Smith.

Tulsa will lose about one-third of its 6,800 employees at the maintenance plant, Smith said. The job cuts in Tulsa will be part of an overall reduction of 13,000 employees company wide, American Airlines officials.
