Tulsans enjoy short commute
Published: December 14, 2008
TULSA, Okla. (AP) — A study by the U.S. Census Bureau shows the average suburban commuter in metropolitan Tulsa takes less than 20 minutes to get to work.
City planner Theron Warlick says much of the credit should go to city planners who built roads in critical locations.
While Warlick acknoledges some exceptions, he says for the most part Tulsa has road capacity where it is needed.
One drawback is that quick commute times discourage revitalization of downtown districts, which have grown in other cities as homeowners abandoned the suburbs to live closer to work. But with relatively free-flowing traffic, the suburbs remain within easy reach of downtown, giving little incentive for commuters to relocate.
Instead of luring suburban families to move, Warlick says Tulsa seems to be attracting young, childless professionals as well as aging empty-nesters.
