Turkey and Dew with a side of budget cuts

Happy Saturday. It’s time for a look at this week’s Edmond news.
Turkey day. Anticipation is growing as volunteers soon will be peeling, mashing, baking and broiling enough to feed a multitude at the 28th annual Thanksgiving dinner, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday in Nigh University Center at University of Central Oklahoma. One year my family went to a turkey farm to get a range-fed bird. The farmer told us he had successfully bred some of the birds to create a six-legged turkey. "How does it taste?” I asked. "I don’t know ... I can’t catch him,” the farmer said.
Do the Dew. Ben Stone, an illustrator and graphic designer from Edmond, was picked by Mountain Dew drinkers to design the logo for one of three new flavors to be released soon. This makes me think back to the time some of my friends and I collected Mountain Dew bottles in the 1970s. Remember the tall green bottles with the picture of a hillbilly shooting at someone, maybe a revenuer, in the distance? The bottles came in variations with a smiling or a worried-looking pig sitting next to the hillbilly. Some bottles had the hillbilly closing one eye to line up his shot while in others he had both eyes open. There were also several different names following "Bottled By.” There are collectors out there who still trade these old bottles.
Budget cuts. The city of Edmond is doing some belt-tightening as city Finance Director Ross VanderHamm announced sales tax collections are 7 percent below projections this fiscal year. To cut the city budget, one Texas town decided to give all municipal employees 104 personal days a year. They’re called Saturdays and Sundays.
