Two drown in Waurika Lake in separate incidents

Two men died hours apart Saturday at Waurika Lake in Jefferson County, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

Two men drowned hours apart Friday in separate incidents at Waurika Lake in Jefferson County, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

Gary Vance Burkhart II, 41, Waurika

About 3:30 p.m. Friday, Burkhart drowned in Waurika Lake after jumping off a boat and attempting to swim 150 feet to shore in rough waters near the Kiowa 1 Campground, troopers said.

Burkhart's wife heard his calls for help, and she tried to get a life jacket for him, but when she returned, Burkhart was underwater and did not surface.

Maximiliano Garcia, 18, Duncan

About 7:30 p.m., Garcia ran into the water at the Chisolm Campground area to get a soccer ball. He began to struggle before going under the water. Family members tried to rescue him but were unsuccessful, troopers said.

The body was recovered Saturday about 9:15 a.m. has disabled the comments for this article.
