Two men drowned hours apart Friday in separate incidents at Waurika Lake in Jefferson County, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.
Gary Vance Burkhart II, 41, Waurika
About 3:30 p.m. Friday, Burkhart drowned in Waurika Lake after jumping off a boat and attempting to swim 150 feet to shore in rough waters near the Kiowa 1 Campground, troopers said.
Burkhart's wife heard his calls for help, and she tried to get a life jacket for him, but when she returned, Burkhart was underwater and did not surface.
Maximiliano Garcia, 18, Duncan
About 7:30 p.m., Garcia ran into the water at the Chisolm Campground area to get a soccer ball. He began to struggle before going under the water. Family members tried to rescue him but were unsuccessful, troopers said.
The body was recovered Saturday about 9:15 a.m.
