— Two Oklahoma City girls sitting inside a broken down van in the roadway were killed when the van was struck by another vehicle early Friday, authorities said.

Killed were DaJia La Nae Brown, 17, and Karla Duenes, 17, both students at Classen School of Advanced Studies. Both died of head and internal trunk injuries, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

The driver of the van, Sofia Gabrielson, 16, of Oklahoma City, also is a student at the school. She was flown by helicopter to OU Medical Center, where she was admitted in serious condition with a head injury, the patrol reported.

“The staff and students at Classen School of Advanced Studies are grieving the loss of two students and hoping for a full recovery for the third student involved in the accident. Grief counselors are on hand at the school to provide support,” spokeswoman Tierney Tinnin said in a news release.

Brown and Duenes were juniors at the school. Gabrielson is a sophomore, Tinnin said.

The wreck happened about 1 a.m. Friday on State Highway 51 in the westbound lanes just east of Interstate 35, according to the patrol report.
