Recent history of U.S. Grant High School

Sept. 22, 2004

Officials break ground on a new U.S. Grant High School funded by MAPS for Kids.

2005-06 academic year

U.S. Grant is put on the federal “needs improvement list” for the first time. It appears on the list every year after.

Oct. 16, 2006

Police show up at the school to break up a large fight and arrest several students on suspicion of gang activity.

Jan. 8, 2007

Students return from Christmas break to a new school. The $33 million school replaced the aging, overcrowded old school.

Feb. 11, 2008

Interim Principal William “Bill” Einspahr takes over after Phillip Wallace retires.

May 28, 2008

Leonardo Avila, shown at right, a junior, drowns while visiting Arcadia Lake with friends on the last day of school.
