Descriptions of various jobs performed by volunteers at the 2014 U.S. Senior Open:

Marshals (750 needed total): Similar to marshals on a public course, six to eight marshals on every hole are instructed to keep play moving. At a PGA event they also help locate and protect bad shots from the gallery. Marshals also are encouraged to help promote physical safety and enjoyment by fans.

Practice areas marshals: Volunteers make sure players have what they need but also manage the practice area. One part of the job is placing signs near practice areas to inform fans who is on the driving range or practice green.

Transportation (150 needed): Duties range from supplying a Lexus-issued vehicle to players when they arrive at the airport to actually driving USGA officials, VIPs and players around the Oklahoma City area.

Walking scorers (60 needed): Championship-savvy veterans with tons of experience use palm-sized electronic devices to update each player’s score. They also assist in compiling statistics like driving distance, greens in regulation, etc. “They’re the rocks we lean on. A lot of them volunteer year after year regardless where the tournament is held,” said Brianne Miller, U.S. Senior Open championship manager.

Hospitality suites (125 needed): Their primary responsibility is to check credentials and help control access into the VIP areas.

Leaderboards (100 needed): Volunteers keep fans up to date on who is leading the tournament on 14 different leaderboards located around the course.

Merchandise (100 needed): Sell and stock championship mementoes.

Standard bearers (100 needed): Teenagers follow a specific group of golfers, carrying around signs that provide each player’s name and overall tournament score.

Program sales (20 needed): Sell programs to fans in various areas around the course.
