ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A science building at the University of Alaska Anchorage was temporarily evacuated after an apparent chemical spill.

The Anchorage Daily News reports a professor spilled calcium carbide into a sink with the faucet running in a lab in the university's ConocoPhillips Integrated Science Building Wednesday afternoon.

It mixed with water, creating a flammable gas. The professor was working alone. He left the lab and called 911.

University spokeswoman Jessica Hamlin tells KTUU it appears most of the chemical went down a drain, but officials are investigating.

The building was evacuated about 3:30 p.m., but firefighters were allowing people to re-enter 45 minutes later. There were no injuries
