UC Irvine downs UNLV 10-3 at Corvallis regional

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Connor Spencer hit a two-run double in a five-run fifth inning and UC Irvine cruised past UNLV 10-3 on Friday in the opening game of the NCAA Corvallis regional.

Spencer finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs for the Anteaters (36-22). Andrew Morales (10-2) gave up two runs and four hits over seven innings, striking out four. Relief pitchers Mitch Merten and Matt Fielding did not yield a hit in the final two innings.

Patrick Armstrong opened the scoring for UNLV (35-24) with a two-run homer in the second inning. UC Irvine scored two runs in the third before putting the game away in the fifth.

Taylor Sparks had three hits with a triple for the Anteaters and Evan Cassolato, Chris Rabago and Jerry McClanahan all added two RBIs.

John Richy (11-4) had eight strikeouts in 7 2-3 innings but gave up eight runs in the loss.
