Explosives expert to visit UCO Friday

EDMOND — Military explosives expert J. Keith Butler will visit University of Central Oklahoma Friday to speak with Chemistry Club students and will also serve as the guest speaker for the meeting of the Oklahoma Section of the American Chemical Society.

BACKGROUND
Biography
J. Keith Butler is currently the chief chemist at the Milan Army Ammunition Plant in Milan, Tenn., and earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Union University, and a master’s degree in inorganic chemistry from the University of Memphis.

He has more than 20 years of experience performing acceptance testing on components used to load, assemble and pack ammunition for the U.S. Army.

Butler will speak to students at 1 p.m. in Room 222 of Howell Hall about the precautions to take when working with explosive compounds.

At 8 p.m. in Room 301 of UCO’s Nigh University Center, Butler will give a special presentation focusing on the military use of explosive material, and the characteristics explosive material must meet for the military.

Butler also will discuss the historical development from primitive weapons to modern non-nuclear military explosive weapons.

Butler is the chief chemist at the Milan Army Ammunition Plant. The presentation at the American Chemical Society meeting is free and open to everyone. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. before the society’s meeting for $18 and $5 for students.
