Police have not released the names of the officer or the dead man.

About 25 people gathered across the street outside Lakeside Village Apartments. Many were upset and said the shooting was unprovoked.

Orlando Thomas said he heard four shots and went outside to see what was going on.

“From what I know, you should have never shot if you've never seen a gun,” Thomas said. “What I know is that he never showed a gun and the officer took fire.”

Summer Chain said she was at another complex waiting for a friend to unlock her car when she heard the shooting.

“I heard a shot,” she said. “When I started down the road to see what happened, the parking lot was filled with cops. It was really chaotic.”
