NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — A union spokesman for striking nurses says they have asked Lawrence and Memorial Hospital to allow nurses to return to work Saturday night while contract issues remain unresolved.

Matt O'Connor of AFT Connecticut said in an email that talks Friday ended with the union wanting to meet again Saturday but representatives for the New London hospital saying they needed more time to review a proposal and would return to the table Tuesday.

Hospital spokesman Michael O'Farrell said the hospital will not grant the request to allow nurses to return to work when they end their strike at 11 p.m. Saturday because the hospital wants continuous care for its patients without the threat of another strike while talks are ongoing. He said patient care has not suffered since the strike.
