NORMAN — Norman students will learn leadership skills and about community volunteer opportunities through a program offered by United Way of Norman.

The agency is accepting applications for the 4 REAL leadership program through Dec. 16. The program is open to 30 Norman ninth-graders. The program teaches how to helpothers. The United Way of Norman has been having the program for 10 years.
The six-week course begins Jan. 20. Students will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. Cost for the program is $45, which includes meals, a T-shirt and materials.
The classes will feature guest speakers, team-building exercises and a hands-on community service project.
"This program gets students excited about volunteering and shows them the opportunities that are out there in the community, so they can get out there and make a difference,” said Jed Dembowski, United Way of Norman spokesman.
